Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has asked Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George to step down and retire immediately, reported CBS News, marking the latest high-level leadership shake-up at the Pentagon. Gen. George was nominated by President Joe Biden and confirmed in 2023 for a four-year term.

The Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said in a statement that George, the Army’s 41st chief of staff, would retire effective immediately and thanked him for his decades of service. Gen. Christopher LaNeve, the Army’s vice chief of staff and a former military aide to Hegseth, will serve as acting chief of staff.
In concert with the removal of Gen. George, Gen. David Hodne, head of the Army’s Transformation and Training Command, and Maj. Gen. William Green, head of the Army’s Chaplain Corps, were also removed from their posts.
Hegseth has made a number of changes to the military’s top brass during his time as Secretary of Defense, including firing Gen. C. Q. Brown, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who Hegseth claimed had reached his position through DEI considerations.
